Ricky Gervais was an early adopter when it came to producing podcasts. Gervais’ podcast started out as a free comedy podcast offered through the Guardian Unlimited, and quickly rose in popularity setting a Guinness World Record for the most downloaded podcast in 2007. Ricky Gervais does his comedy podcast alongside Stephen Merchant and Karl Pilkington. The Ricky Gervais podcast covers a plethora of topics from the World Cup, to sociology, to the interesting mind of show boob Karl Pilkington. The comedians’ podcast was so successful that in 2010 HBO adapted his comedy podcast into an animated show, the first of its kind, now entering its second season. If you’re like me, more and more of my daily tasks are done online, in front of the computer, sitting and looking intently at the screen. Today, for example, I was paying bills, shopping for an upcoming birthday, and doing a quick check for free auto insurance quotes online in an attempt to find cheap car insurance and reduce our monthly expenses (and help pay for that birthday gift!). Exciting? No. Necessary? Yes. What does this have to do with internet radio? Well, listening to some of my favorite upbeat music certainly helped to make that hour more enjoyable. Seems like a small thing, but it made otherwise dry, dull tasks more enjoyable. To me, that’s a good thing!

What is Internet Radio?

Much like traditional radio programming, internet radio is much the same. It is delivered to listeners via a continuous stream over the web. Users can access the programming on “stations”or websites that host either one individual show or many shows over varying topics. Internet radio is different from podcasting, in that users do not have to download the programming. The shows stream freely without a media device needed. Some online radio shows are connected or a part of a traditional radio network or show while others are independently owned and operated.

Using the power of the internet, the music industry has also invaded the internet. It has taken advantage of the exponential positive effects of using the internet to become more popular. Since most people are using the internet on a regular basis, the music industry has even become more successful. The internet has probably superseded the conventional way of listening to music. You can now find websites which will allow you to listen to your favorite songs. You can either find internet radio or music download sites.

Online listeners have treated these two music resource as one. Well, you probably have seen few of these sites on the internet if you are one of those people. Although there are some similarities, internet radio is quite different from music download sites.

Pandora Radio is an automated music recommendation service and custodian of the Music Genome Project. Users enter a song or artist that they enjoy, and the service responds by playing selections that are musically similar. Users provide feedback on approval or disapproval of individual songs, which Pandora takes into account for future selections.

While listening, users are offered the ability to buy the songs or albums at various online retailers. Over 400 different musical attributes are considered when selecting the next song. These 400 attributes are combined into larger groups called focus traits. There are 2,000 focus traits. Examples of these are rhythm syncopation, key tonality, vocal harmonies, and displayed instrumental proficiency.
